How do Honda hybrid models work?
Honda already has over 20 years of experience working on hybrid chips. Let’s take a look at the history of the development of this type of drive. It can be recycled under the program scrap cars for cash.
The brand’s first combustion-electric drive was used in the Insight, which went on sale in Japan and the United States in 1999.
This system was then called IMA (for Integrated Motor Assist), and the Insight itself attracted attention with a rather original design – with the characteristic designed rear wheel arches – subordinate to aerodynamic parameters. Other models with a similar system include the Civic and Accord. However, they were offered at the same time as other drive types. In 2009, the next generation Insight appeared, and a year later, a new model called the CR-Z. Like the Insight, the CR-Z was only and exclusively available with a hybrid system, however, it had the task of delivering more driving pleasure than the hybrids then offered. It was a small and very nimble 3-door coupe with a sporty silhouette, alluding to the iconic CR-X model and denying the theory that a hybrid car should be boring. In 2010, the IMA system was first used in the Honda Jazz, renowned for its unprecedented capacity and exceptional functionality in the segment. Like its petrol variants, the Jazz Hybrid is equipped with Magic Seats, the comfortable rear-seat folding system for which this model is renowned for being extremely versatile.
In early 2019, Honda unveiled a new hybrid that was first used in the fifth-generation multifunctional version of the CR-V. At the Geneva Motor Show in March 2019, Honda confirmed the direction the company will take by announcing that all major models offered by the brand will be electrified.
To reflect this vision, any next-generation electrified powered model will receive an “e:” logo with an extension containing the name of the electrification technology being used. In confirmation of Honda’s commitment, the fourth generation of the Honda Jazz entered the market this summer, along with a new variant of the model, the Jazz Crosstar.
The Honda Jazz, intended for the European market, is only available with a hybrid drive similar to that used in the CR-V Hybrid. According to the announcement, the Jazz trunk lid has a new “e: HEV” emblem, where “HEV” stands for hybrid technology and is derived from the Hybrid Electric Vehicle name.
Honda hybrid layout – what is it made of?
Used in the Jazz model, the hybrid system consists of two electric motors, a 1.5-liter DOHC and VTEC petrol engine, a lithium-ion battery, an innovative direct drive and a control unit. The maximum transmission power of the Honda Jazz is 109 hp. with. and is the same as the maximum power of the electric motor. This is due to the performance of the system, which has an electronically controlled transmission (E-CVT) with a fixed gear ratio. The benefits of using it are very important. A simple design with small moving parts pays off for its reliability and exceptional durability, ensuring long-term, trouble-free vehicle operation.
How does the hybrid system work?
The Jazz Hybrid System always operates in one of three modes. The optimal operating mode is very quickly and smoothly matched by the computer to the given situation on the road. The whole process takes place in a way that is indistinguishable for the driver. During city driving, up to 80% we travel in electric mode (EV Drive), where a lithium-ion battery powers the electric drive directly. Driving in electric mode provides emission-free driving, during which the drive does not use the combustion engine. When more dynamic acceleration is required in the city, the drive switches to Hybrid Drive, in which the petrol engine acts as a helper. When it works, it generates energy, and it goes to the generator. There it is converted into current, which is then transmitted to the drive motor. During city driving, the drive automatically switches between electric and hybrid modes for maximum efficiency. The third mode – the internal combustion engine – turns on when driving at high speeds, which means, mainly on high-speed roads. Here, a clutch lock mechanism is used, which allows direct transmission of torque from a 1.5 DOHC and-VTEC gasoline unit to the wheels of the car. In this case, the electric motor takes over the role of the assistant who charges the generator.
Advantages of a hybrid car
We benefit most from using a hybrid vehicle in a city where electric mode is most used. In addition, the frequent braking inherent in city driving forces the hybrid system to recover most of the energy it later uses to drive in electric mode. The fact that most of the time the diesel or gasoline engine is not running translates into increased driving savings. In the official information for the Jazz model, Honda claims fuel consumption of between 3.7 and 5.9 l / 100 km, depending on the driving style. Moreover, it does not affect performance degradation. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h is 9.4 seconds, which is a very good result for a city car.
Equipped with the previously mentioned Magic Seats rear seat folding system, Honda is not only a very economical but also extremely functional vehicle that fits into the current trends of electromobility. The new Jazz is the first in a series of Honda vehicles to be identified with the “e:” emblem. Honda is announcing the systematic rollout of electrifying products. A very important milestone in the company’s strategy is the launch of the all-electric Honda e model. This small and at the same time very modern car has already appeared in the countries with the most developed infrastructure for charging electric vehicles. This June, Honda e won one of the most prestigious industrial design awards, receiving the Red Dot: Best Of The Best 2020 for Design Innovation.
